1. Controller
Christian Drapatz
Kämpenstrasse 42

Email: support@onetwoapps.com
No data protection officer has been appointed; none is required by law.
2. Principle: processing on your devices
Snow Compass has no server of its own, no user account, no sign-in, no ads, no analytics, no third-party SDKs and no tracking. Everything the app stores and calculates happens on your iPhone or Apple Watch. The developer has no access to this data. Data only leaves your devices in the cases described below: Apple services (map, search, Apple Health, optionally iCloud), exports you trigger and support emails.
3. What the app stores on your device
- Recordings: track with timestamps, speed, altitude, elevation, steps, runs and lifts with slope and lift names, pauses, battery level at start and end, name, note, tags and color tags.
- Places and tours you save, optionally with a reminder.
- Photos along the route with location, altitude and viewing direction.
- “I need help”: accommodation, last ride (place and time) and the name and phone number of emergency contacts you enter yourself. The app does not read your contacts.
- Ski-day plan (meeting point, lunch break, last ride) and gear including rental skis with photos, rental shop, period and price, entered by you.
- Settings, goals and the state of a running recording (to restore it after a crash).
- Health values (see sections 6 to 8): heart rate series, average and maximum heart rate, active energy, heart rate zones, training load and your body data.
The data is kept in the app’s protected storage. It is part of your device’s normal backup, on your computer or as an iCloud backup if you turned that on in iOS. Such a backup is managed by Apple or your computer, not by the app.
Retention: until you delete the data in the app or remove the app.
4. Location
The app uses your location to record the track of a recording you started, also while the screen is locked. In the background, location only runs while a recording is running or paused; during that time the system shows the blue location indicator. In the foreground the app also uses your location without a recording, for example for your position on the map, saving a place, the location of a photo and the help view. The app only asks for “While Using the App”, never for “Always”. Your location is not sent to the developer.
5. Other permissions
The app asks for each permission only when you use the matching feature. All are optional; without them only that feature is missing.
- Motion & Fitness: barometer for more accurate altitude and elevation, step counter for walking. The app stores these readings only with your recordings.
- Camera: photos during a recording.
- Photos (add only): only if you turn this on or save a photo, the app puts a copy into your library. The app never reads your library.
- Notifications: local reminders for saved places, the return reminder (last lift, bus or train) and notices from the ski-day plan (meeting point, lunch break). There are no promotional notifications.
- Apple Health: see section 6.
6. Apple Health and health data
Heart rate, body data and values derived from them are health data within the meaning of Art. 9 GDPR. The app only processes them if you explicitly turn this on: Settings › Recording › “Use health data”, off by default. iOS then asks in its own dialog which data you share.
What the app reads from Health:
- heart rate (during and after the recording, reloaded for up to 24 hours), resting heart rate and active energy,
- weight, date of birth (only the year is used) and biological sex,
- workouts, only to find your Apple Watch workout and not save it twice.
What the app writes to Health:
- for each saved recording one workout with sport, duration, pauses, route and distance.
The iPhone writes no active energy, no heart rate and no body data to Health. With “Live Heart Rate” (section 8), the watch saves the workout with the energy it measured, and the iPhone adds route and distance.
The app uses data from Apple Health only for the features described here. It is not used for advertising or marketing, not sold, not passed on to third parties and not stored in iCloud.
You can change what you share at any time in the Health app under Profile › Apps or with the switch in the app. Workouts already saved in Health stay there even if you delete the recording in the app; you delete them in the Health app.
7. Body data and calorie calculation
Body data: Under Settings › Recording › Body Data you can enter weight, year of birth, sex and resting heart rate yourself. Empty fields are filled from Health if access is on. If Health later differs, the app asks whether to take the new value. Body data stays on this device only (and in its backup). It is never synced via iCloud and never written back to Health.
Calculations, all on the device:
- Active energy (calories): If the Apple Watch measures the workout, the app uses its value. Otherwise it estimates from heart rate (Keytel 2005 formula, using weight, age and sex) or, without heart rate, from movement (MET values per sport, using weight). Lifts and pauses do not count. The app always shows the method.
- Heart rate zones: from resting and maximum heart rate (Karvonen) or from maximum heart rate; the maximum is estimated from age using Tanaka if you do not enter it. Custom limits are possible.
- Training load: TRIMP of the last 7 days compared with the last 28 days.
These values are estimates for personal guidance, not a medical assessment. Snow Compass is not a medical device. The app makes no decisions about you within the meaning of Art. 22 GDPR and passes nothing on to third parties.
Without body data or heart rate the app works fully; some values are then missing or energy is estimated from movement only.
8. Apple Watch, widget, Live Activity and Siri
- Apple Watch: The watch shows the values of the running recording, controls it and shows your places. Data travels over Apple’s on-device connection (WatchConnectivity); no developer server is involved. With “Live Heart Rate” (Settings › Recording, off by default) the watch starts a workout session, measures heart rate and active energy and mirrors the session to your iPhone using Apple’s system features. If Health access is on, the watch saves the workout to Health; the iPhone adds route and distance instead of creating a second one. The track is always recorded by the iPhone.
- Live Activity: shows activity, duration, speed, altitude and distance; heart rate only if you turn on “Show heart rate in the Live Activity” (off by default). If “Hide sensitive data” is active in iOS, it hides the values while the device is locked.
- Widgets and Controls: “Last ride” (name, activity, distance, duration, top speed, vertical), “SOS” (emergency numbers of the detected country), “Conditions” (weather), “Season” and “Way back” show no health values. The Controls “Start ride” and “Pause/Resume” control the recording. A tap opens the app.
- Siri and Shortcuts: “Start recording” (optionally with an activity, can be turned off with “Start via Siri”) and “I need help in Snow Compass” run on your device.
- Spoken announcements are generated on the device; nothing is transmitted.
9. iCloud sync (optional)
The app works fully without iCloud. Sync is off by default. If you turn it on, the app syncs recordings with their tracks and small map image for the history, photos, places, tours, emergency contacts, accommodation and last ride between your devices through the private CloudKit database of your own iCloud account. The developer has no access to it.
Not synced are heart rate, heart rate series, active energy read from Health or calculated from heart rate, heart rate zones, training load and body data. Before syncing, the app removes these values from every recording. Calorie estimates calculated from movement and weight using the MET method are included in recording sync.
If an entry was changed on two devices, you decide which version applies. You can turn sync off at any time. Apple’s privacy policy applies to iCloud: apple.com/legal/privacy.
10. Backups
All data the app stores on the device, including health values, is part of the normal device backup. Whether that backup is on your computer or in iCloud is your choice in iOS settings. The app itself uploads no health values to iCloud.
11. Export and sharing
- GPX: You can share a recording as a GPX file. It contains your track with locations, altitudes and timestamps, but no health values.
- PDF: route report (map, metrics, elevation profile, photos) and the “How was the day” day report, without health values.
- App file (.skt): places, tours or all data, for backup or moving to another device.
- You can also share places as a QR code and photos via the system share sheet.
Import: You can import a GPX track from another app or places from pasted GPS coordinates. The file or text is only read on your device. Heart rate values from a GPX file are only imported if “Use health data” is on; they stay local and never go to iCloud. To find the address of an imported place, the app asks Apple (section 12).
You decide where you send files. By sending, you pass the data to the chosen recipient; the app is not responsible for their processing.
12. Map, search and slope data
The slope, trail and lift data of 36 regions ships inside the app and works offline (source: © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL, see slope data and license). Showing and matching it sends no request to OpenStreetMap.
For the base map (standard, satellite, hybrid), place search, addresses for a place and “Open in Apple Maps” the app uses Apple’s services (MapKit). Apple receives the map area, your search terms or the coordinates concerned and your IP address; Apple’s privacy policy applies. The app loads the small map images in the history on its own in the background, also for older recordings and without you opening the map; for this Apple receives the map area of each track and your IP address. If you tap a link to OpenStreetMap or open a place in Apple Maps, you leave the app.
Weather: For “Conditions” and the ski-day check the app requests the weather for your location or for the valley and summit stations of the detected ski resort from Apple Weather (WeatherKit). Apple receives the coordinates and your IP address; Apple’s privacy policy applies. The developer receives nothing.
Emergency numbers: The emergency numbers for 119 countries are stored in the app and shown without a network. The app determines the country on the device from your location or from your manual selection. A call is only placed through the Phone app after you confirm; the app itself does not dial.
13. Legal bases
- Core features (recording, location, map, search, barometer, step counter, camera, help view, storage on the device): Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (providing the app features you request). Storing on the device is strictly necessary for these features (Section 25(2) No. 2 TDDDG).
- Health data (reading from Health, body data, calculations, writing to Health, Live Heart Rate, heart rate in the Live Activity): your explicit consent under Art. 9(2)(a) in conjunction with Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR. You give it by turning on the switch (“Use health data”, “Live Heart Rate”, “Show heart rate in the Live Activity”) and agreeing in the iOS dialog.
- Emergency contacts: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR for you; for the people you enter, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (your legitimate interest in reaching someone in an emergency). The details stay on your devices or in your iCloud.
- iCloud sync: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (a feature you turn on).
- Support emails: Art. 6(1)(b) or (f) GDPR (legitimate interest in answering requests).
- Crash reports via Apple: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (fixing bugs), only if you agreed in iOS.
Withdrawal: You can withdraw any consent at any time with effect for the future by turning off the switch in the app or removing access in the Health app or iOS settings. Processing up to that point remains lawful. After withdrawal the app no longer reads or writes health data; you delete stored values in the app and workouts in the Health app.
14. Data Apple provides to the developer
If you turned on “Share with App Developers” in iOS, Apple passes crash reports and aggregated usage statistics to the developer. This data is pseudonymous and only used to fix bugs. The developer also receives aggregated sales and download figures in App Store Connect with no link to you. Apple handles the purchase itself as a separate controller.
15. Contact by email
If you write to support, the developer processes your email address and the content of your message to answer your request. Emails are deleted once your request is settled, at the latest after 12 months, unless the law requires keeping them. They are stored by the mailbox provider on the developer’s behalf.
16. Disclosure to third parties
The developer passes no data to third parties. The only recipients are Apple as part of the system services described (map and search, Apple Health, optional iCloud sync, push notifications for sync, crash reports with your consent) and the recipients you send files to yourself. Apple may transfer data to countries outside the EU, in particular the USA; Apple is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
17. Deletion
- Single entries: delete recordings, places, photos and contacts directly in the app.
- All data: “Delete all data” in Settings removes all of the app’s data from this device, including body data and settings. If iCloud is on, the app first deletes the data in your iCloud; if that fails, it stops and keeps the data on the device so the two do not drift apart.
- Apple Health: workouts the app or the watch saved in Health stay there and are deleted in the Health app.
- Backups: you manage old device backups in iOS or on your computer.
18. Your rights
Your data is on your devices or in your own iCloud account. You can view, change, export and delete it in the app at any time. You also have the rights under the GDPR to access (Art. 15), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20), objection (Art. 21) and withdrawal of consent (Art. 7(3)). Write to support@onetwoapps.com; the developer replies within one month. Since the developer receives no data from the app, a request for access usually only concerns support emails.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority. The authority responsible for the controller (based in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia) is:
Landesbeauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit Nordrhein-Westfalen (LDI NRW)
Kavalleriestraße 2–4
40213 Düsseldorf, Germany
Email: poststelle@ldi.nrw.de
Web: ldi.nrw.de
19. Children
The app is not aimed at children under 16. With your consent it reads the date of birth from Health only to calculate energy and heart rate zones.
20. Changes
If the app changes in a way that changes the processing, this policy will be updated. Earlier versions are archived.
