← My Budget Book

For existing customers

From the old app to the new one

Have you been using My Budget Book for years? Then version 7 is a free update for you. The app was rewritten from scratch and tries to migrate your data on first launch. Here is what happens, what you should do beforehand and what to do if something doesn’t work.

The essentials

  • Free. Version 7 replaces the old app as a normal update in the App Store, same listing, same purchase. New customers pay €2.99, you pay nothing.
  • Your data is migrated. On first launch the app looks for the old database, makes a safety copy and carries over accounts, categories, payment methods, people, groups, entries, recurring entries, templates and budgets.
  • The app checks itself. Counts, totals and balances per account and year are compared before and after the migration. On any discrepancy it rolls back automatically.
  • You need to set up again: password protection and automatic backup.
  • Clean-up: “Files of the old app” shows everything the old app left behind and lets you delete it. The app never deletes anything by itself.
  • One request: If something isn’t right, write to support@onetwoapps.com first, before rating. We answer personally and solve the problem.

Before the update: three minutes well spent

The update works without preparation. These steps make it safer and save you trouble later. The checkmarks are remembered only by your browser.

How the migration works

Find

On first launch, as long as there is no entry in the new app yet, it looks for the old database in the app’s own storage. If it finds several, it asks which one.

Explain

Everything runs in one window in three steps: a page explains what happens, names the number of entries found and points out iCloud and “one device only”. Then two safety confirmations; only the second one starts with “Migrate”.

Migrate

Safety copy of the current data, then reading entries (with progress bar), carrying over, checking. You can cancel until shortly before the final step.

Report

Green, orange or red: what was carried over, what with a note, what not. Copy, share, print. Then “What’s new” and the guided tour.

What is carried over

Carried overNot carried over
Accounts with opening balance, categories (two levels), payment methods, people, groupsPassword protection (set up again)
All entries including transfer pairs, reconciliation and marksAutomatic backup (set up again)
Recurring entries as seriesOld backup files .mhs / .mhc (not readable)
Templates, budgets (now calculated live; the old app’s monthly budget copies are dropped, the report names the number)Mail presets, sorting and view settings
Read-only categories become normal categoriesSplit entries and due dates (only in the Pro version)

Reading the report

Green: everything carried over. Counts and totals match. You can carry on right away.
Orange: carried over with a note, or not carried over. Some rows could not be assigned unambiguously (for example a missing account). Every row lists all old values so you can add them by hand.
Red: error. A whole table was unreadable. The app changed nothing and kept the old state. Send us the report via “Share”, we’ll have a look.

The last report remains available under Settings → Import & Export → Last migration report.

Running it again later?Under Settings → Data → Import old database you can repeat the migration at any time. Careful: every run replaces all current data, including entries you have already recorded in the new app. There is no “only fill in what’s missing” mode. On the Mac there is no automatic search; there you open the old database file via File → Import … or drag it onto the window.

Viewing and deleting old files

Over the years the old app accumulated files: the database, copies of it, backups, exports, chart images, imported files and a folder in iCloud Drive. Under Settings → Import & Export → Files of the old app (iPhone and iPad) you see everything sorted by group, with date and size. After a successful migration the report offers “Clean up old files” at the top.

  • Every file can be shared via “…” or swiping (only locally available ones) or deleted, with a confirmation. Files in iCloud Drive are deleted on all devices; ones not downloaded appear as “In iCloud, not downloaded”.
  • You delete the old database only in two steps and only after the migration was fully successful. After a cancellation or with rows not carried over, deleting is blocked, with a reason.
  • The app never deletes by itself. You decide what can go.
  • “Migration safety copies” (same place) shows safety copies left behind after a cancellation. You can delete or restore them; restoring replaces your data.

If iCloud is unreachable, the page points to Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage storage.

The second way: CSV import

As in the old app there is a CSV import, just more extensive. For the old version’s CSV exports the new app has its own profile (“Mein Haushaltsbuch, old app export”). You open the file via Settings → Data → Import, on iPhone also via “Open with” from Mail or “Files”, on the Mac by dragging it onto the window.

  • Preview with duplicate check, rules fill empty categories, undo after import.
  • Unlike the database migration, the CSV import replaces nothing; it adds entries. So you can migrate first and then fill gaps via CSV.
  • A CSV export contains only entries. Budgets, templates, recurring entries and settings come only via the database migration.
  • Old export files show up under “Files of the old app → Exports”; via Share → “Open with” you pass them to the import.

Beyond that, the import reads CSV, QIF, OFX/QFX and CAMT.053 with 59 profiles for banks and finance apps. More in the guide.

What changes for you

The five areas Status, Overview, Statement, Statistics and Goals are still there. A few things are different, a lot is new.

“What’s new” in the appAfter the migration the app shows once a screen with everything new, the changes compared to the old app and what is honestly still missing. You find it later under Settings → Information. All changes sorted by version are in the changelog.

What is still missing, honestly

  • Excel export: gone. CSV opens in Excel and Numbers; plus PDF, HTML and Markdown.
  • Split entries and due dates from the Pro version are not included.
  • Old backups (.mhs/.mhc) cannot be read. Migration only from the database or via CSV.
  • Weeks and custom periods don’t exist as a period; for any range use the detailed search with date from and to.
  • Shared budget book with other people doesn’t exist; iCloud only syncs your own devices.
  • Translations other than German and English are machine made and not yet checked by native speakers.

If something goes wrong

Bringing 15 years of data into a completely new app is a big step. We checked the migration against real datasets, but something we don’t know may still show up with yours. Hence the request: give us the chance to fix it before you rate. A one-star rating doesn’t tell us what went wrong; an email does.

  1. Open Settings → Import & Export → Last migration report and tap “Share” or “Copy”.
  2. Write to support@onetwoapps.com with the report, your device and iOS version. No financial data needed; the report contains only counts and notes.
  3. We answer personally, usually within one or two days, and ship an update if needed.

The old database stays on the device until you delete it yourself. Nothing is lost.
